Natural Ways To Increase Progesterone > Short Menstrual Cycles And Fertility

Does it seem like one period is just getting over when the next one starts? I hear from many women who have questions about short menstrual cycles. According to my gynecologist, there is a lot of variability in cycle length, however a cycle is considered too short if is less than 3 weeks between the time between when one period starts and when the next one starts.

If you're over 40, your cycle length may get shorter. As women get older, typically cycles get closer together - probably due to weaker hormone production. If you are trying to conceive this can be problematic because you may not be able to sustain a pregnancy since your hormones are falling too fast. When I first started trying to get pregnant, my progesterone was referred to as a "ski jump" It rose fast, but then fell too quickly. Also, according to my gynecologist, extremely short cycles could be an indication of another underlying problem. Some of these underlying problems could include uterine fibroids or other growths in your uterus. The theory here is that your uterus is contracting and bleeding to get rid of these foreign growths. It may be worth a visit to your gynecologist to rule out any obstruction in your uterus before you try to conceive.

Lengthening Your Menstrual Cycles

When I was trying to concieve, I did have some variability in the length of my cycles. As I got older, my cycles got shorter and lighter (sometimes as short as 21 days). However, I was able to lengthen my cycles after implementing what I call my "pregnancy protocol". This involved hormone regulating foods and natural progesterone cream. I'm not saying every month was a long cycle, but overall, my cycles returned to what would be considered the normal range, especially when trying to get pregnant.

Explanation of Hormones

Hormones are “chemical messengers” which target receptor sites. When they find the receptor site, they give the message. If the receptor site is not healthy, there could be a transmission error. Consumption of essential fatty acids can help correct this problem. Fish like salmon, fish oil supplements, seeds and nuts like walnuts and almonds can be good sources.

To help your body manufacture progesterone naturally, be sure you are getting enough of the following:

1. B Complex vitamins – especially B6
2. Protein – hormones are essentially proteins, so eat organic meats, or vegetable protein. Beans are a great source of vegetable protein and they are loaded with fiber and other nutrients which help fertility.
3. Magnesium
4. Soy has been found to lengthen menstrual cycles. There seems to be a lot of controversy on whether or not soy is a healthy food and whether or not it can help fertility. I did make soy a part of my diet when I was trying to conceive. Most sources agree that fermented soy is healthier than unfermented soy. Fermented soy can be found in miso, tempeh, and natto.
5. Green Vegetables (leafy)

You can also experiment with using natural progesterone cream, this page explains more on what it is and how to use it.
